Why you don’t need to ask about current salary
It’s still a common question.
“What are they earning now?”
Even when the candidate fits the role.
Even when they’re fine with the salary range.
Someone still asks it.
Why?
Usually, it’s fear.
Fear the offer won’t land.
Fear the process will collapse at the final hurdle.
That fear is valid.
But the question isn’t helpful.
It can damage trust.
It can fuel pay gaps.
And it’s not the best way to get aligned.
There’s a better approach.
What Works Instead:
- Benchmark the role properly
- Share the salary range in the advert
- Confirm expectations during screening
- Use a best offer policy
Be upfront. Pay fairly. Keep it simple.
You don’t need to play games.
You don’t need to base offers on someone else’s past.
You just need to be clear from the start.
It helps everyone make better decisions.
It creates a fairer process.
And it leads to better hires.
Give it a go on your next role.
