Stay Positive During a Slow Job Market
The job market may feel slower than usual. Roles are taking longer to open up, competition is tough, and even seasoned candidates are waiting weeks for responses. If you’re job hunting right now, it’s easy to feel discouraged. But remember, you’re not alone, and this phase doesn’t define your abilities or your value.
While you can’t control the speed of the market or the number of open roles, you can control your approach. Set clear, realistic goals for your job search. This could mean applying for a few roles each week, following up with connections, or spending a set amount of time on LinkedIn each day. Consistency is key. Focus on keeping momentum without overwhelming yourself.
Connection is vital. During a job search, it’s easy to feel isolated, especially if you’re used to a busy team environment. Stay engaged by reaching out to former colleagues, mentors, or industry contacts. Have conversations, ask questions, and stay updated on industry trends. Most job opportunities arise from people, not ads. Staying visible and active in your network is more important than you might think.
Learning something new can also help keep you motivated. You don’t need to take on a huge qualification or change careers. Even short courses, webinars, or reading about trends in your field can boost your confidence.
It’s also okay to learn something purely for yourself, keeping your mind active and curious is essential for resilience.
Mindset plays a big role. It’s normal to feel frustrated after rejections or weeks of no feedback. Try not to take it personally. Rejection is part of the journey and often has nothing to do with your worth.
Make sure you take breaks, get outside, and do things that make you feel good. Celebrate small wins, whether it’s a useful conversation, positive feedback, or simply finishing your daily applications. Every step counts.
Above all, remember that you’re not alone in facing these challenges. Many others are in the same situation, and the market will improve. In the meantime, stay consistent, stay connected, and prioritise self-care.
All it takes is one “yes.”
