What if You Had to Pay Candidates for Their Time?
Let’s flip it.
Imagine you had to pay candidates for every hour they spent in your recruitment process.
The travel.
The prep.
The presentations.
The follow-ups.
The case studies.
The delays.
What if every interview came with an invoice?
What if a second stage meant paying peak train fares and a fair day rate?
Still keen on four stages?
Still need that extra presentation?
Still taking a week to make a decision?
I’m not saying the idea is perfect.
But it raises a fair question:
Would you run things differently if every step cost you money?
Because for candidates, it already does.
They pay in time, energy, annual leave, childcare costs, and more.
We talk a lot about thorough processes.
Yes, rigour matters.
But there’s a difference between thorough and bloated.
Hiring shouldn’t feel like a test of endurance
We forget it’s a two-way street.
And we forget that candidates are investing in us, too.
So next time you’re designing your process, ask yourself:
Would I still want to do this if I had to pay for it?
Because maybe you should be.
At the very least, you should respect the cost to others.
