How to Write a CV That Works?
The purpose of your CV is simple.
It tells your story.
More importantly, it tells your story well.
When someone is hiring, they have a problem.
Maybe they need someone to manage people.
Fix a process.
Hit a deadline.
Grow a team.
They’re hoping you are the person who can solve that problem.
That’s what your CV needs to show.
Quickly.
Start With a Strong Profile
The first few lines should make it clear who you are, what you do, and what you are good at.
Be specific.
Good example:
Experienced HR Business Partner with 10+ years across tech and finance. Strong track record in driving engagement, improving retention, and managing complex employee relations.
Avoid vague claims like:
“Motivated team player with a passion for people.”
Work History: Keep It Simple
List your jobs in reverse chronological order.
Use standard formatting.
No graphics or fancy fonts unless you work in design.
For each role:
- Add a short intro to the company
Example: “Fast-growing SaaS company with 120 employees across 3 countries” - Describe what you did and use bullet points
- Back up your achievements with facts
“Reduced time-to-hire by 25%”
“Led HR due diligence during a £10m acquisition”
“Delivered a new L&D programme reaching 80 staff”
Final Tips
- Keep your CV relevant
- You don’t need to include every job you’ve ever done
- If you worked at McDonald’s at 16, it only belongs if you’re early in your career
Focus on what supports your case for the job.
Show that you understand the problem the employer is trying to solve and that you can help solve it.
