It’s Not You. It’s the Market.
I put a post on LinkedIn recently.
It seemed to resonate with people.
It was about the job market, and how brutal it’s been.
Over the last year, I’ve spoken to a lot of people who’ve been affected.
Good people. Seriously good.
People who never used to be available on the market.
And if they were, they’d usually get snapped up straight away.
Not right now.
The market’s slow. Slower than usual. Slower than expected.
And it’s catching people off guard.
Especially those who’ve always had strong progression inside an organisation.
Or those who’ve moved through a headhunt or a quiet referral.
Now they’re in a place they’ve never really been before:
Actively job hunting.
In a tough market.
With little feedback.
Endless processes.
And not many roles out there.
That knocks people.
Doesn’t matter if you’ve got 2 years of experience or 20.
Doubt creeps in.
Confidence takes a hit.
You start questioning things you never questioned before.
So here’s the reminder I gave on that post:
It’s not you. It’s the market.
Your skills haven’t disappeared.
Your value hasn’t changed.
This isn’t about your ability, it’s about timing.
The market is slow.
But not dead.
Jobs are being filled.
People are getting hired.
It’s just not fast.
Which means you need two things:
- Resilience
- Self-care
I’m not talking about spa days and candles.
I mean:
- Get outside
- Talk to people who get it
- Switch off when you need to
- Do something that reminds you who you are
This is hard. But it will pass.
When the right role comes along, and it will, you want to be ready.
You want to be in a headspace where you can walk in, own it, and feel like yourself again.
And six months from now, we’ll look back and remember how hard it felt, and how far you’ve come.
Hang in there.
Good things are coming.
Thank You
